Born in 1836, William Gleason came to America from Ireland, with his family when he was a lad of fifteen. In 1865, Gleason began his own machine shop to manufacture a general line of metal working tools and machines which evolved into The Gleason Works. Today, Gleason Corporation operates within one business segment. The principal activity is the design, manufacture and sale of machinery and equipment for the production of bevel and cylindrical gears. |

In 1900 Wälzfräsmaschinenfabrik Hermann Pfauter is founded in Chemnitz and in 1949 the company moved from Chemnitz to Kornwestheim, near Stuttgart. In 1997 Hermann Pfauter joined Gleason Corporation, Rochester NY, USA. and renamed as Gleason-Pfauter Maschinenfabrik GmbH. Today the company is producing Gear Hobbing Machines, Gear Shaping Machines, Gear Profile Grinders and related equipments. |

In 1987 Pfauter-Maag Cutting Tools L.P. is established with the purchase of the tool division of the Barber Colman Company. In 1997 The Pfauter Group becomes part of the Gleason Corporation in Rochester, NY. and the company renamed as Gleason Cutting Tools Corporation. The company is producing all kind of bevel and cylindrical gear cutting tools and conducting research and development on material and coating for tool life improvement. |

During World War I shipments of cutting tools from the U.S. to England were getting difficult, then The Gleason Works licensed Buck & Hickman to manufacture these tools in the U.K. In 1959, the company decided to purchase the tooling business from Buck & Hickman. In 1967, the plant was moved to Plymouth area, to its current location. Gleason Works Ltd is producing bevel gear cutting tools and provide application engineering services to its customer. |

Dealing with local customers only, the company is producing Bevel Cutting Tools, Coniflex Tools and Shaving Cutters.
